The starting full-time salary is £24,921 rising incrementally to £27,351 per annum on completion of 4 years’ service.

In addition, 20.00% shift allowance and 14% weekend enhancements are payable upon completion of the initial 6 weeks training course, taking total starting salary to £33,394.14 rising incrementally to £36,650.34 per annum on completion of 4 years’ service.

Detention Officers play a vital role in the safe and smooth running of West Yorkshire Police custody suites.

Working as part of a team under the supervision of the Custody Officer they deal with the large number of detainees who are brought to the custody suites each year. They will assist with the safety and wellbeing of detainees from the moment they arrive at the police station, be that under arrest, returning on bail or attending voluntarily for the purpose of biometric data capture (Eg to provide fingerprints or DNA).

The role is designated under the Police Reform Act 2002 to provide Detention Officers with the powers to carry out certain parts of the role profile; biometrics data capture, collection of non-intimate samples and where necessary using reasonable force to restrain detainees.

General duties involve booking people in and out of custody, preparation and serving of food, dealing with enquiries from partner agencies, solicitors, members of the public etc, and maintaining the custody suite to a compliant standard.

Detention Officers will be based at one of the Force’s five operational custody suites.  Postings will depend on which location currently has vacancies:

  • Bradford

  • Halifax

  • Huddersfield

  • Leeds

  • Wakefield
